“This is the first mattress I have purchased on my own and I am already very pleased with the Marquam queen. It is supportive, comfortable and just the right height (we chose the low-profile foundation). The great quality of material and construction is obvious – we are already sleeping so much better than before! And I am so thrilled that the product is locally-made!”
“Perfectly priced mattress for teenagers – all four of our teenagers needed new mattresses and they all give their new mattresses 5 stars for comfort and coziness even our 13-year old girl who is like the princess in The Princess and the Pea. She can find nothing to complain about.”
“My wife and I bought this bed for our daughter. Not only is the mattress great, the customer service was incredible. Knowledgeable staff and didn’t push you in the sale, just simply explained the benefits of each bed. We’ll definitely be back!”
“One of my initial problems when I first started searching for mattresses was that I needed to buy two new mattresses at the same time. So I was very cost conscience. When I first checked out Parklane’s website and came across the Marquam mattress I was a bit skeptical. But one of the reviews that I read on this mattress encouraged me enough to actually go into a Parklane store and try the mattress out. I am so thankful that we did. These mattresses are wonderful quality. Both of my children love them. My husband and I will often read in bed with our kids and we both find these mattresses very comfortable as well.”
“This is my elementary aged son’s bed. I read to him in bed and think the bed is comfortable and he says it’s great. This mattress is affordably priced and thus far has proven to meet my son’s needs.”
“I am so pleased to have this mattress. After not sleeping well for days on end, this mattress was/is like sleeping on a cloud. I’m just sorry I didn’t do this sooner.”
“I’ve only had this mattress for about a month, but I love it. I had some neck/back pain that apparently was aggravated by my old mattress as those are both now almost completely gone. I’m very pleased with my purchase and will definitely consider both Parklane and this particular model when I buy a new mattress for my guest room.”
“I bought this mattress for my guest bedroom about three weeks ago and my guest said it was very comfortable and she is pretty picky. Excellent prices at Parklane. I could have saved 50% if I would have purchased my own mattress there. Will return in future.”
“I was on a tight budget, I can’t believe the quality of mattress I got from Parklane for the price. Pays to buy direct from the manufacturer.”

Q. In general, is a buyer expected to negotiate a little on price when buying from a mattress store? Any tips you would have on this thinking from a first time buyer perspective?
A. Our philosophy is different than most retail stores on pricing in that we are the manufacturer and sell direct to consumers, we establish our prices once per year and do not mark them down or haggle over pricing. This is in stark contrast to most mattress retailers that are actually “resellers” they buy the product from a manufacturer, mark it up and resell it. Many artificially mark the mattress up higher just so that they can mark it back down “on sale” or add in “free” items that are never really free, they are simply added into the final cost of the mattress. For a first time buyer that does not shop with Parklane a few tips to wade through the artificial “price wars”. No store can survive in business selling at 50% off or higher discounts – this is simply a game to make a customer believe they are “winning”, the price is simply artificially inflated to be marked back down. Always pay attention to the final sales price – the price you will pay if you want to take it home the same day, all the other prices quoted or listed are simply marketing spin. There is never a “today only” price, the store is in business to sell mattresses, if you come back the next day 99% of the stores in business will offer the same price, they want to sell product and not allow willing buyers to walk back out the door a second time. Again if you are not shopping with Parklane we suggest you find a store that has their final price marked everyday without having to haggle over pricing.
Q. What are your thoughts about a mattress warranty, and what a buyer should be looking for in this regard?
A. Mattress warranties are important however they should be viewed similar to warranties on tires for your vehicle. A tire with 50,000 miles still works however it will not have the same grip and performance as a brand new tire. Mattresses are similar in that they wear with use and a mattress that is 8-9 years old will not provide the same level of comfort and support as a brand new mattress. A mattress warranty details how long the materials will last in the mattress not that a mattress will provide the same comfort and performance a decade into use. The key element for discussing mattress warranties are what does the warranty actually cover – repairs or replacements and how often or rare a specific model has had warranty issues. Parklane produces 100,000 mattresses per year and averages a .0003% warranty rate – or 30 mattresses out of 100,000 (industry average is 12-14%).
Q. If you are comfortable answering this (if not, I’ll exclude this question altogether), do you recommend any particular brands or manufacturers that you know make a quality product? What sets them apart?
A. The best brands are those that put the customer first and invest in design and durability, while still handcrafting a large part of their products. Each use superior components and do not attempt to simply make the cheapest product possible. Some of the best builders of mattresses today: McCroskey, Kluft, Aireloom, Savoy, Carolina Mattress Guild, Carpe Diem, Hastens, Custom Comfort.
Q. Is there anything else you would add that I didn’t specifically ask about which would be helpful for someone who has never bought a new mattress, and wants to make sure they get a fair deal and a quality product?
A. While the internet is great in providing information nothing beats an informative salesperson that you trust, and while the industry is fascinated by technical information on product specs what truly matters is getting better sleep, try to find a salesperson you trust and allow them to be the expert at guiding you to a product specifically fit to your needs. Read reviews on the stores you are shopping at – not just the products. Ask your friends and family for referrals to a store they trust.
The better sleep secret.
Q. Tell me about Parklane and the customer experience you provide
A. Parklane was founded in 1921 on the east side of Portland, Oregon. Parklane is the oldest mattress manufacturer still operating in Oregon. Parklane sells direct to the public through 8 local showrooms offering a wide range of mattress models including latex, gel, memory foam, pocketed coil, and fine wire innerspring models. Parklane’s goal is to fit every customer to the right mattress that supports their unique body and sleep position irrespective of price. Our pricing is set once per year and we do not offer promotions, sales, or discounts so that we remove any haggling or gimmicks to the mattress fitting process. We do not artificially inflate our prices to offer “free” items. Parklane’s founding philosophy is to build a better mattress using only the best available components so that the mattress will last/perform better longer and so that each customer is happy to refer Parklane to their friends and family.
Q. Buying a Mattress is often thought of like buying a car – people tend to be anxious about their decision. If I am a first time mattress buyer, what are a couple of the key questions I should be asking from the store I am buying from?
A. First question to ask is does the store fit mattresses to specific sleep positions? For example “I’m a back sleeper can you direct me to the models designed specifically for back sleepers” Once directed to the models. “Can you explain why this model is best for how I sleep”. The next question to ask is if the store has a similar model to what you are currently sleeping on. It is a great frame of reference to understand what the customer is comfortable sleeping on by knowing what type/brand of mattress they currently have. If the first question from a store is “what is your budget?” or “this mattress is on sale/special” the store is not interested in fitting you to a mattress that will improve your sleep and work best for your body and sleep style. More than likely the mattress being offered is what provides the store the highest profit or biggest spiff/commission for the salesperson.
Q. Many people look to thing like memory foam mattress toppers to put a “band-aid” on an old mattress, seeing this as a way to save money. What are your thoughts about this approach?
A. Memory foam toppers have their place as most consumers buy too firm of a mattress that does not fit or improve how they sleep. A memory foam topper can soften up a too firm mattress and improve overall comfort. However if a mattress is no longer providing support, is not keeping your spine, hips, and shoulders aligned at night, or is causing pressure points and numbness while you sleep a memory foam topper is only going to mask the problem with the mattress and may make things worse. The overall quality of mattress toppers has dramatically dropped over the last several years as the big box and warehouse stores have flooded stores with inferior products in an effort to continually lower prices. There are very few mattress toppers available today with a useful life of more than 6 months, on a per day cost of use a $99 memory topper actually costs more than buying a high quality $1000 mattress that will last 10 years ($.55 per day for the topper vs. $.27 per day for the mattress)
Q. The first instinct when you walk into a mattress store is to start sitting or laying on some mattresses to see what you like. Do you think this is the best way to test out a mattress? Are there any other tactics or things a buyer should be checking out when they are in a mattress store?
A. When mattress shopping first realize that to get the best out of the experience you need to devote at least an hour per store. You will be spending over 2000 hours on the mattress during the next year, a solid hour testing the mattress should not be a huge sacrifice. If possible wear comfortable clothes, nothing tight or restrictive, remove any jackets or bulky items and shoes if you can. Try to find a pillow that matches how you sleep at home and supports your neck properly, once you find a comfortable pillow in the store carry it from mattress to mattress to get a better comparison between different models. Try and limit your mattress choices to a maximum of 3 models (ideally 2 models) within the first 10-15 minutes of shopping. Once you have narrowed your selection spend the next 20-30 minutes on the mattress. The goal is to try the mattress in the same sleep position as you sleep at home, this is huge hurdle for most customers as few stores have privacy built into their showrooms and few feel comfortable trying to sleep in front of other people. If you are a side sleeper, laying on the mattress on your back with your feet crossed (the top position most customers try when laying on a mattress) will provide a dramatically different feel than actually laying on your side or in your “normal” sleep position. The top reason customers return a mattress is that it feels different once they have it delivered then what they felt in the showroom. The primary reason for this is that in the showroom the customer tested in a “not normal” sleep position, once at home they are able to sleep in their “normal” sleep position and the mattress feel is markedly different then either what they remember or is uncomfortable for their “true” sleep position.

Despite the new memory foam and air-filled models now available, many people still prefer the classic comfort of an innerspring mattress. Buying one, though, is a serious investment that requires much thought beforehand. Let’s look at some of the factors you’ll want to consider when deciding on the best innerspring mattress for your needs:
1. Do you sleep on your side, or on your stomach and/or back? – Side sleepers tend to prefer a mattress with more give than back or belly sleepers, who quite often enjoy the extra support a firm mattress gives. Firmness level is determined by many things, such as the number and type of coils, the thickness of their wire, and the padding material above them. Your salesperson can assist you in matching your sleeping style to the right product for you.
2. Are you allergic to any fabrics? – The cushioning layer of a mattress can be made from a variety of materials, such as cotton, felt, wool, memory foam, or even silk. If you have an aversion to any of these materials, make certain that the product you buy doesn’t use it.
3. Do you want a pillow top? – These add an extra layer of comfort to the mattress, but can also become compressed over time. Something to consider is the fact that they are attached to the mattress, and cannot be replaced. Talk to your salesperson about any concerns you may have regarding pillow tops.
4. How long do you want the mattress to last before needing replacement? – In many cases, materials used to make a mattress softer or more luxurious can also cause it to lose support more quickly. Talk to your salesperson about the expected life of the innerspring mattress before you make a final decision.
Parklane Mattresses offers an extensive variety of innerspring mattresses to suit every taste and budget. Check out our extensive line and contact us with any questions you might have. We’re here to help make your sleep as restful as possible by providing the best innerspring mattress for you.

While the economy is slowly getting better, times are still tough for a lot of folks. One of the few good things about hard times is how they can help us return to the values of thrift that our parents and grandparents knew so well. Of course, not all money-saving ideas are good ones. Some are just plain silly and a few are outright dangerous. Examples include: riding around with bald tires or bad brakes, letting needed house repairs go undone, and taking chances on a so-called recycled mattress. We’ve touched on this topic before, but we felt it would be good to revisit it. So here’s a frightening tale that came our way recently. We really hope it’s just made up.
The Mattress that Led to a Visit From the Mob
A young newlywed couple was looking for things to furnish their modest one-bedroom apartment when they happened across a thrift store in the older section of town. As they walked in the door, they sneezed from the dust that filled the air. For a second, they thought about leaving, but they decided to just have a quick look-around.
In a corner, they spotted a stack of old mattresses piled high. They had been sleeping on an old foldout couch and were desperate for a more comfortable sleep surface. Reluctantly, they stared at the eight or nine cast off mattresses, each of which had a tag hanging from it that said, “RECYCLED FOR YOUR PROTECTION.”
“Can I help you young people?” the voice behind them said. Turning around, they were taken aback by what they saw. A bent, wizened old figure was barely visible in the shop’s dim light. He looked at them through one eye, while the other was shrouded in darkness.
“We – we were just looking for a mattress, something cheap but comfortable,” the husband managed to say. The pair really wanted to leave but didn’t dare hurt the shopkeeper’s feelings. They looked at him with a mixture of fear and pity.
Then, they saw his mouth twist upward into a snake-like grin. “Gotcha,” he said. “Well, you’re in luck.” He pointed at the pile of mattresses in the corner. “On the very top, there is one I just got in. It’s from a rich people’s hotel uptown. Was only slept in once before the place closed. It’s been debugged and sanitized. I’ll let you have it for twenty bucks.”
The couple could barely believe their ears. Twenty dollars for a practically new mattress! They went over to look at it. The cover appeared clean, and it was good and firm, the way they liked their sleep surfaces to be. They paid the owner of the place and managed to cram their new purchase into their aging minivan just as the sun was setting. Then they set off for home.
That night, they laid it directly on the floor of their tiny bedroom. It was lumpy and uneven, like it was stuffed with something hard in places, but they were exhausted after their long day and quickly fell asleep.
It was two hours later when they woke with a start. There, standing above them in the pale moonlight coming in from the window, was a huge man in an expensive suit. He had scars on both his cheeks and on his knuckles. His head was totally bald, but the scariest thing of all about him was the very large gun he held in his right hand.
“So you’re the pair that Ace sold the mattress to,” he said, a leer stretching across his misshapen face as he spoke. “Too bad that old coot didn’t know what it’s filled with.” He waved at the couple to rise. “Get up and sit in the corner. I got some property in there, and I want it back.”
Terrified, the pair did as the man said. As they cowered on the floor, he pulled a razor-sharp knife from his pocket. Kneeling down, he sliced into the fabric, cutting a gash twelve inches long. Then he reached inside.
The couple’s faces went ashen as they saw what he pulled out. It was a human skull, bleached white and grinning at them horribly. “Trophy from a sporting contest I entered a while back,” the man said, smiling at them at he tucked the grim memento into the pit of his arm. “Couldn’t stand to lose it.” He raised his gun, and the pair’s hearts stopped for a fraction of a second. Then the huge gangster slipped the pistol into his coat. “Don’t worry,” he said. “You two seem like nice people, so I’ll let you live.”
He started to walk away, then turned to look at them one more time. “Let me give you a piece of advice,” he muttered. “Next time, don’t buy a recycled mattress.” Then he went out the front door and disappeared into the night.
Some Things We Know Are True
Now, we’re pretty sure the Mattress Mafia aren’t going to send you to ‘sleep with the fishes’ if you buy a recycled mattress, but here’s what we DO know: mattresses made as recently as the mid-2000s contain toxic chemicals that can cause skin rashes, breathing problems, and even severe allergic reactions. That’s not to mention how pre-owned discount mattress sets frequently harbor dangerous pathogens and microscopic parasites that spread disease. So don’t gamble with your health. Here at Parklane, we have brand-new, quality mattresses for every budget, and we’ll do everything we can to help make one of them affordable to you. Call us or visit one of our locations today.

Virtually anything can be bought on the Internet these days. Online shopping has brought world-class shopping to anyone with a computer, even those who live in remote areas. So it only makes sense to consider an online mattress store when looking for a new sleep surface.
Of course, it’s only natural to have some concerns. Many people wonder if they can trust online retailers. Others are worried about buying products sight unseen, and some are concerned about getting a shoddy product. Those are all legitimate concerns. So in this article, let’s look at how buying mattresses online doesn’t have to be a bad experience. On the contrary, it can be the perfect way to find the sleep surface of your dreams, at a price that can’t be beat.
The Web Changed Everything
Those of us who remember the dark days before the Internet can appreciate how much it has changed the world. Take finding information about a given subject, for example, great places in Canada to go fishing. To learn about this topic in the pre-web era might have meant calling dozens of travel agents or bait and tackle shops. It could have led the seeker to the local library or had him or her browsing newsstands for magazines with related articles, or even asking random strangers if they have any insight into it. It might have been days, weeks, or months before enough information could be acquired to make an informed decision.
Times have changed. After entering the term “great places in Canada to go fishing” into Google, I was rewarded with 120 million sites that discuss the subject. It made me want to try my hand at fishing.
The web has done the same thing for mattress shoppers that it did for fishermen. It has given them information and options that they would never have had before it existed.
Why the Internet is a Great Place to Buy a Mattress
You don’t have to shop online to buy from us, of course. Aside from our online mattress store, we have over 30 locations across the Pacific Northwest, and each one is staffed with courteous, knowledgeable experts that can help you find the best product for your needs. However, even if you live in Dallas, or New York City, or Fancy Gap, Virginia, you still have access to both our full line of products and the support you need to pick the right one. Our toll-free number is 1-800-790-6422, and we’re available 9:30-6:00 PST Monday through Friday to assist you with any questions you might have. Also, you can always email us at email@example.com. Whichever method you choose, you’ll get the support you need to make the right choice.
“But Don’t I Need to Try it Out First?”
That’s the most common concern people have when they’re thinking about buying a mattress or other sleep product online. Think about it; how much actual “try out” time do you get in most stores? 30 seconds, a minute, maybe two? Are you able to slip underneath the covers and curl up into a cozy little ball? Is the lighting in the showroom like it is in your home? Are you able to lie down until you doze off? Will the salesperson let you spend the night on the mattress, just to make sure you feel refreshed and alert the next day?
Of course the answer to those questions is no. In fact, in some retail establishments you might barely have any time to think before you’re pressured to make a decision. Then, before you know it, you’re sitting at home waiting for the mattress to be delivered, wondering if it will work out for you at all.
A Better Way to Buy
The truth is, making sure you’re getting the right product comes down to asking yourself a series of questions before you start looking around. This is good advice no matter what you’re in the market for. However, when it comes to mattresses, ask yourself these things:
• How firm do you want your sleep surface to be? Some folks love to be swallowed up in soft, luxurious fabrics. Others like to feel the solid comfort that comes from firm or extra-firm materials. What do you prefer?
• Are you a side, back, or stomach sleeper? This is a big factor in determining what model will give you the most satisfaction. Be sure to ask yourself this question before you choose a product.
• Do you have back or neck problems? This is a major concern for many people, and it’s something our sleep experts should know, in order to offer you the best service possible.
• Do you tend to be a “hot” or “cold” sleeper? Some folks break out in a sweat even if they’re lying in bed uncovered. Others get a chill unless the heat is on full blast. This is important to determine, as it will help decide if some mattress materials are better for you than others.
• Do you have any allergies? Some people must be very careful about the mattress they choose, due to allergic reactions from certain materials. Be sure to note any issues you may have in this area and let us know.
• How important are organic materials or recyclability to you? Many of our customers want to know that their sleep surface has no products made from certain chemicals. Others want to know that, when the mattress finally wears out many years from now, its components can be recycled. Let us know if you have these concerns.

Ever since it appeared on the market a few years back, memory foam has become an incredibly popular mattress material, and for good reason. Its ability to mold perfectly to the contours of the human body makes it an ideal sleep surface. However, like all products, its quality varies from one manufacturer to the next. That’s why purchasing a discount memory foam mattress can cost you far more than buying a quality one. Here are some specifics:
• Cheaper memory foams wear out quickly. Their internal structure breaks down under weight easily, due to the inferior materials used. You could easily go through four or five “discount” mattresses in the time it would take you to wear out a single one from Parklane.
• Discount mattresses often have an objectionable smell. This can happen with all types of memory foam, but the odor goes away quickly when you buy one from Parklane, if you ever notice it at all. Cheaper alternatives, on the other hand, will retain their stench for weeks or even months. This is due to the overuse of low-quality adhesives in their construction.
• A discount memory foam mattress can turn hard and abrasive over time. This is because they have lower Indentation Load Deflection ratings than better quality ones, so the material loses its loftiness and collapses into a rigid structure with no give.
• Lower quality memory foam contains industrial toxins that are used to make the manufacturing process cheaper and quicker. These poisons stay in the mattress throughout its lifetime and can aggravate allergies, cause breathing problems, and produce skin rashes.
When you look at the facts, it’s clear that cheap, off-brand memory foam mattresses are no bargain. Trust the ones sold by Parklane instead. We use only high-grade products that will give you year after year of supportive, restful sleep, with no hazardous products that can compromise your health. Shop with us today.
